Halftone reproduction of a photograph, copied from the official publication "Medal of Honor, 1861-1949, The Navy", page 155.
Lewis K. Bausell was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" when he threw himself on a grenade to save the lives of other Marines during action against the Japanese on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, 15 September 1944.
Corporal Bausell died of his wounds on 18 September, after being evacuated to the attack transport USS DuPage.
