USS Castle Rock (AVP-35)

Lieutenant Robert S. Selby, USN, shoots the sun with a sextant, while standing in one of the ship's 40mm gun tubs, April 1945. The ship is in Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, with several PBM seaplanes moored in the distance.

Note 40mm gun barrels overhead, and ready-service ammunition racks around the gun tub perimeter, some empty and some containing four-round clips of 40mm ammunition.
