River Gunboat Designed to Characteristics for the 1924 Building Program ... July
7, 1923
Preliminary design plan for a river gunboat for operation in Chinese waters. This
drawing represents one of a series of alternative plans considered to provide a
design for ships intended to be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 program, fulfilling
General Board characteristics approved on 16 December 1922. This design was based
on electric drive machinery that was found to be too heavy for such a small vessel.
This plan shows an overweight condition of 38 tons, causing excessive draft.
The design was passed over in favor of new efforts to limit size by reducing the
weight allowance for machinery.
This plan provided two 3-inch guns, electric drive machinery, and a speed of 16
knots in a ship 180 feet long on the waterline, 34 feet in beam, and with an
intended normal displacement of 490 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
