Thomas Connor was born in 1842 in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States and enlisted in the U.S. Navy from the state of Maryland, serving as an Ordinary Seaman on board USS Minnesota during the American Civil War. During the land assault on Fort Fisher, North Carolina on 15 January 1865, Connor risked his life to save a wounded officer, though most of the men around him retreated. For his conduct on that occasion, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
