Annie Keith Frazier (Mrs. R.N. Somerville), (188_-19__)

At the age of sixteen, Annie Keith Frazier, daughter of then-Governor James B. Frazier of the State of Tennessee, was Sponsor for the armored cruiser Tennessee when that ship was launched on 3 December 1904. In February 1908, when her father was a U.S. Senator from Tennessee, she was the principal founder of the Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, an organization which continues to operate to this day. Miss Frazier, who later married R.N. Somerville of Cleveland, Mississippi, remained active in the Society's affairs for the rest of her life.

The original newspaper clipping has been annotated with a typewritten note by the subject.

Fine screen halftone reproduction of a photograph of the ship ready for launching, at the Cramp Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 3 December 1904. A portrait of her Sponsor, Miss Annie Keith Frazier, is vignetted into the view.
The original print was provided by Mrs. (Annie) Keith Frazier Somerville, founder of The Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, for printing as the frontispiece of a calendar produced by the USS Memphis (originally named Tennessee) "Survivors" organization in 1962 for the benefit of needy members.

Attendees at the Society's organizational meeting, in Washington, D.C., February 1908. The photograph was given to the Society by Mrs. Annie Keith Frazier Somerville, one of its founders. Her mother had sent a photographer to Washington's Willard Hotel to take this view.

USS Memphis

Air port salvaged from the ship's wreck after she was driven ashore by a tidal wave at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on 29 August 1916.
By letter of 17 October 1917 Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels offered this object to the ship's Sponsor, Mrs. R.N. (Annie Keith Frazier) Somerville, founder of The Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, as a possible momento. See Photo # NH 99947 for a photograph of that letter.
