Dr. Granville S. Hall, Ph.D., (1844-1924)

Granville Stanley Hall was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts, on 1 February 1844. Following graduation from Williams College in 1867, he pursued further education and taught at Antioch College. In 1878 he received a Ph.D. degree from Harvard University, the first such degree awarded in the United States in the field of psychology. During the following decade, Dr. Hall studied, taught and worked aggressively to establish scientifically-based psychology as an academic discipline. He became the first President of Clark University, in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1888. Though he left the position in 1892, his association with the school's graduate program persisted. Dr. Hall's pioneering work in child psychology was an important component of contemporary education reform efforts. He also played a signficant role in promoting psychoanalysis during the first part of the Twentieth Century. Granville S. Hall retired from Clark University in 1920 and died on 24 April 1924.

USS Granville S. Hall (YAG-40), 1953-1972, was named in honor of Dr. Hall.
