Lieutenant Betty W. Mayer, Nurse Corps, USN, (1880-1959)

Betty W. Mayer was born in Patterson, Pennsylvania, on 25 August 1880. She entered the Navy Nurse Corps in March 1909 and served in Naval medical facilities in the United States and in the Philippines during the years prior to World War I. She was a Chief Nurse at Navy Base Hospital # 1, in Brest, France, in 1918-19, and served as an Assistant Superintendent of the Navy Nurse Corps in 1923-30. Subsequent assignments included duty at Great Lakes, San Diego, and Philadelphia. Chief Nurse Mayer retired from active duty in September 1934. When Navy Nurses were included in the Navy's ranking system, she received the retirement rank of Lieutenant in recognition of her service as Assistant Superintendent of the Nurse Corps. Lieutenant Betty W. Mayer died on 12 November 1959.

Seen here is the white indoor duty uniform (left), authorized 22 January 1923, and the same uniform with cape.
