Raymond Lee Newcomb, (1849-1918)

Raymond Lee Newcomb, born in Salem, Massachusetts, on 31 December 1849, served as naturalist and astronomer on the ill-fated Jeannette Arctic expedition of 1879-1881. He was one of the thirteen expedition members who survived a lengthy ordeal on ice, sea and frozen land during the last half of 1881. Newcomb died at Salem in 1918.
