Auburn (American Freighter, 1918).
Served as USS Auburn (ID # 3842) in 1919

Auburn, a 5808 gross-ton cargo ship, was built at Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1918 as part of the great World War I shipbuilding program. Completed after the war ended, she was turned over to the Navy for service with Naval Overseas Transportation Service and placed in commission as USS Auburn (ID # 3842) in late January 1919. While preparing for her first voyage, serious problems were found in her steam plant and the Navy decided that it no longer needed the ship. She was decommissioned in February 1919, after a few days less than a month of service, and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. Auburn was disposed of during the early 1930s.

This page features the only view we have of the freighter Auburn, which was USS Auburn (ID # 3842) in 1919.
