Cambridge, a 1694 gross ton coastal steamer, was built at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1890. She had been previously been named Boston. In October 1917, while she was undergoing repairs, the ship was purchased by the U.S. Navy from the Boston & Yarmouth Steamship Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Though assigned the registry ID # 1651, she was soon determined to be unsuitable for World War I service. Cambridge was stricken from the Navy list at the beginning of March and in early July 1918 the Commandant of the Third Naval District recommended that she "be sold as early as practicable as value is likely to decrease instead of increase". She was finally sold in March 1919, without ever having been an active Navy ship.
This page features the only views we have concerning the steamship Cambridge, which was taken over by the Navy in 1917 but had no active service.
