Steamship Georgia (1869-1878)

Georgia, an iron side-wheel steamship, was originally completed in 1865 as USS Shamokin. After the Navy sold her to private owners in October 1869, she was extensively rebuilt for merchant employment and renamed Georgia. The ship operated for nearly a decade before she was wrecked off Costa Rica on 30 September 1878.

This page features our only view of the steamship Georgia, originally USS Shamokin.

For an image of this ship prior to entering merchant service, see:

  • USS Shamokin (1865-1869).
