Lake Borgne, a 2100 gross ton freighter, was completed at Superior, Wisconsin, in August 1918. She was commissioned at Montreal, Canada, in September 1918 as USS Lake Borgne (no ID was assigned). The ship sailed in a convoy from Nova Scotia in late September and arrived at Nantes, France, on 8 October. Lake Borgne then entered the Army coal trade, carrying coal from the British Isles to French ports. On 21 October 1918, while steaming in a convoy from Penzance, England, to Roscanval, France, she struck a rock off Brest and sank. Ship and cargo were lost, but her entire crew was saved by a British trawler.
This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Lake Borgne, which became USS Lake Borgne in 1918.
