USS Aludra (AK-72), 1942-1943

USS Aludra, a 14,250-ton (full load displacement) Crater class cargo ship, was built at Richmond, California. Laid down in late October 1942 as the civilian "Liberty" ship Robert T. Lincoln, she was soon renamed Aludra and delivered to the Navy soon after completion in mid-December 1942. The ship was placed in commission late in that month. She began her maiden voyage in early January 1943, bound for the south Pacific. Aludra carried cargo in that region during the next six months, supporting the final stage of the Guadalcanal Campaign and the beginning of the fight to capture islands further up the Solomon Islands chain. On 23 June 1943, while en route from Guadalcanal to Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, she was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine RO-103. The submarine also attacked and fatally damaged USS Deimos (AK-78) at that time. Two members of USS Aludra's crew were lost with her.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS Aludra (AK-72).
