-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --

USS Colorado (Armored Cruiser # 7, later CA-7), 1905-1931. Renamed Pueblo in November 1916

USS Colorado, a 13,680 ton Pennsylvania class armored cruiser built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was placed in commission in mid-January 1905. After service in the Atlantic and Caribbean areas, the ship deployed to the Far East in September 1906. A year later she returned to the U.S. to begin duty with the Pacific Fleet, which operated along the west coasts of the Americas and in Hawaiian waters. Colorado returned to Asia between September 1909 and February 1910, and again from November 1911 to July 1912. At some point during this period she was modernized, with the most notable modification being provision of a new "cage" (also known as a "basket") foremast in place of her original military type. Later in 1912 she carried U.S. troops to Nicaragua. Placed in reserve, with a reduced crew, in May 1913, Colorado returned to fully active service for much of 1915 and 1916, operating extensively along the Pacific coast of politically unstable Mexico. In November 1916 the cruiser was renamed Pueblo, freeing her original state name for a planned new battleship.

When the United States entered World War I in April 1917 Pueblo, along with other U.S. armored cruisers, began patrol operations in the South Atlantic. Between February and October 1918 she was employed escorting convoys between the U.S. East Coast and the European war zone. In late 1918 the ship took the Brazilian Ambassador to Rio de Janeiro, then began the first of six voyages as a transport bringing U.S. troops home from France. The latter assignment ended in August 1919, and Pueblo was placed out of commission in September. In July 1920, when the Navy implemented its hull number system, she was designated CA-7. From April 1921 to September 1927 she was used as Third Naval District receiving ship, moored at New York. USS Pueblo was stricken from the Navy list in February 1930 and scrapped in 1930-1931.
