USS Chattanooga (1866-1872)

USS Chattanooga, a 3043-ton steam sloop, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the smallest of a group of large, very fast, steam cruisers begun during the Civil War. Commissioned in May 1866, she ran trials in August of that year, making over thirteen knots, somewhat short of contract requirements. Chattanooga was laid up at Philadelphia after trials. In December 1871, her hull was damaged by ice and she was sold the following month.
