USS Linden (1863-1864, "Tinclad" # 10)

USS Linden, a 177-ton stern-wheel "Tinclad" stern-wheel river gunboat, was built at Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, in 1860 for commercial employment. Purchased by the Navy in November 1862 and converted to a gunboat, she was commissioned in January 1863. During the first half of 1863, Linden took an active part in the campaign against Vicksburg, Mississippi, including operations on the Yazoo River in April and May. With the fall of Vicksburg on 4 July 1863, Linden was assigned to patrol and convoy duties elsewhere on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. While attempting to assist a transport steamer on 22 February 1864, she struck a snag in the Arkansas River and sank.

This page features our only view of USS Linden.
