USS LST-228 (1943-1944)

USS LST-228, a 2366-ton LST-1 class tank landing ship, was built at Seneca, Illinois. Delivered in mid-October 1943, she was placed in reduced commission for passage down the Mississippi and fully commissioned after arriving at New Orleans, Louisiana, later in that month. Several days later the tank landing craft LCT(6)-582 was loaded on her deck for transportation to the European war zone. On 19 January 1944 LST-228 ran aground off Tercina, Azores Islands. Waves and rocks battered both her and LCT(6)-582 until they were beyond salvage. The two amphibious vessels were stricken from the Navy Register in February 1944.

This page features the only views we have concerning USS LST-228.
