USS LST-481, 1943-1948

USS LST-481, a 2366-ton LST-1 class tank landing ship, was built at Richmond, California. Commissioned in mid-May 1943, she spent the rest of World War II taking part in Pacific amphibious operations. These included the November 1943 Gilberts invasion, the capture of Kwajalein and Majuro in January and February 1944, the Hollandia operation in April, the recapture of Guam in July 1944, the Iwo Jima invasion in February 1945 and the landings on Okinawa in April of that year. Later in 1945 LST-481 supported Far Eastern occupation activities. Following her return to the U.S. West Coast, she was placed out of commission at the end of February 1946 and stricken from the Navy list in April. Two years later, in mid-April 1948, LST-481 was sold for scrapping.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS LST-481.
