Naiwa, a 6240 gross ton (12,330 tons displacement) freighter, was completed at Baltimore, Maryland, in October 1918. She was commissioned in the Navy on 4 November 1918 as USS Naiwa (ID # 3512). The ship sailed from Baltimore in late November for La Pallice, France, but after a few hours her steering gear jammed, forcing her to return to port and undergo extensive repairs in drydock. Naiwa sailed again for La Pallice in early March 1919. In April she loaded 7130 tons of German guns and gun parts at Brest, France, delivering them to Norfolk, Virginia, at the beginning of May. USS Naiwa was decommissioned on 9 May 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. She remained in that agency's hands until scrapped in 1929.
