USS Onward, a 157-ton patrol vessel, was built by Charles L. Seabury of Morris Heights, New York, in 1906 as the steam yacht Galatea. Later renamed Ungava and Onward, she was purchased by the Navy in August 1917 and placed in commission in September of that year. During the rest of World War I and in the early peacetime months that followed, she served as a patrol and boarding vessel in the vicinity of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. In April 1919, Onward was transferred to the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. She was sold to a private owner in April 1921 and was renamed Thelma Phoebe two years later.
This page features the only views we have concerning the steam yacht Onward and USS Onward (SP-311).
