USS Petrel (Gunboat # 2, PG-2), 1889-1920

USS Petrel, an 867-ton gunboat, was built at Baltimore, Maryland, and commissioned in December 1889. After serving in the Atlantic until 1891, she steamed to the Asiatic Station where she remained for two decades. During the Spanish-American War, she participated in the Battle of Manila Bay and subsequent operations in the Philippines.

Petrel transferred to the Atlantic by way of Europe in 1911 and served in the Caribbean area until 1917. She patrolled off the U.S. coast during World War I. Decommissioned in July 1919, Petrel was sold in November 1920.

This page features selected 1890s views of USS Petrel.
