USS Snyder (DE-745), 1944-1973

USS Snyder, a 1240-ton Cannon class escort ship, was built at San Pedro, California. Commissioned in May 1944, she operated for the next year as a convoy escort and anti-submarine hunter-killer between the U.S. west coast and the central Pacific. In May 1945, Snyder was transferred to the Okinawa area, where she continued her escort and anti-submarine duties and also served as a radar picket ship. After Japan's surrender, she screened a convoy of transports en route to Nagasaki, Japan. Returning to the U.S. later in the year, she was decommissioned and placed in the Reserve Fleet.

Snyder returned to active service in October 1946 as a training ship for the Naval Reserve, attached to the Third Naval District. In May 1950 her status was upgraded to full commissioned status, and she continued her Naval Reserve training work along the U.S. east coast. She was decommissioned in May 1960. USS Snyder was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in August 1972 and sold for scrapping in November 1973.

This page features our only view of USS Snyder (DE-745).
