USS Sac City (ID # 3861), 1919-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Sac City (American Freighter, 1919). Later S.S. Black Falcon, and S.S. Mary Luckenbach.

Sac City, a 5735 gross ton (11,190 tons displacement) freighter, was completed by the Hog Island shipyard near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in January 1919. She was commissioned in the Navy on 6 January 1919 as USS Sac City (ID # 3861). At the end of that month she sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, with a cargo destined for Montevideo, Uruguay, where she arrived at the beginning of March. Moving to the nearby port of Rosario, Sac City loaded a private commercial cargo and proceeded to Gibraltar. The freighter returned to New York from Gibraltar in June. USS Sac City was decommissioned on 17 June 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. During her subsequent commercial service she was renamed Black Falcon in 1932 and Mary Luckenbach in 1941. While en route to Murmansk, USSR, with Convoy PQ-18 on 14 September 1942, the ship was hit by German aircraft west of North Cape, Norway. The resulting detonation of her cargo of high explosives destroyed S.S. Mary Luckenbach, killing all of the 41 merchant mariners and 24 U.S. Navy armed guardsmen on board.

This page features the only view we have concerning S.S. Sac City, USS Sac City (ID # 3861), S.S. Black Falcon, and S.S. Mary Luckenbach.
