Photo Identification Note (December 2009): When received, the original print for Photo # NH 103848 was labeled as representing USS Frederick (Armored Cruiser # 8). Based on camouflage pattern analysis, it was thought that the ship seen was actually USS Huntington (Armored Cruiser # 5).
However, this is now in doubt. Further evaluation of photographs of both ships indicates that both Huntington and Frederick may have had very similar starboard side camouflage patterns in 1918. The two ships may have differed in the configuration of their mainmasts, with Frederick having an additional platform carried low on that mast. All this is still somewhat uncertain, but it does indicate that ship identifications of Photo #s NH 103848, NH 41797 and NH 44910 (all presented on this page) may really show Frederick, and not Huntington.
