Walter Adams, a 271 gross ton commercial fishing vessel of the "menhaden fisherman" type, was built in 1890 at Noank, Connecticut. Rebuilt at New London in 1898, her career had spanned some twenty-seven years when the Navy inspected her for possible service in March 1917. Inspected again in June 1918, probably at Charleston, South Carolina, she was chartered by the Navy later in that month and, following conversion work, was placed in commission at the beginning of October 1918 as USS Walter Adams (ID # 400). She operated out of Charleston during her brief Naval career, which was cut short by the end of World War I about six weeks after she began active service. USS Walter Adams was decommissioned in January 1919 and returned to her owner at that time.
