Winchester, a 399 gross ton fast (31-knot) steam yacht of torpedo boat configuration, was built at Bath, Maine, in 1916. In May 1917 she was taken over by the Navy from Peter W. Rouss of New York City. Commissioned in early September 1917 as USS Winchester (SP-156), she was initially employed on patrol duty in the Long Island Sound area. Early in 1918 she was sent to Norfolk, Virginia, as a test ship for minesweeping equipment. This work was conducted in the Hampton Roads area until after the end of World War I, in the New York City area between December 1918 and April 1919, and then resumed in Virginia waters. USS Winchester was placed out of commission in mid-December 1919 and sold in March 1921.
This page features the only views we have related to USS Winchester (SP-156) and to the civilian yacht Winchester of 1916.
