- In Chatham County, unintentional injuries, including those caused by motor vehicle accidents, are the fourth leading cause of death, surpassed by only heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for persons age 35-44.
- Deaths from unintentional injuries are evident at a higher rate in Chatham, at a rate of 50.0 as compared to the state rate of 40.7.
- Chatham’s traffic fatality rate is nearly double that of the NC state rate (10.5/1000 in 1994 as compared to 6.1/1000). The Chatham figure is the same as the NC rate for rural counties.
- Chatham’s unintentional motor vehicle mortality rate is also well above the state rate (36.5/100,000 as compared to 20.4/100,000).
- Drownings and boat fatalities have appeared regularly in the news this past year. Jet ski and water ski injuries are common.
