As time passes we will be linking to many community projects both past and present providing an invaluable resource for researchers and community activists.  This page serves as a gateway to the repositories of these projects providing either on-line links or the actual physical location.  Projects specific to one county may be found by clicking on the appropriate county.  Multi-county or general projects can be accessed from this page

Community Diagnosis Projects - To be able to fully comprehend the health of a community, an analysis of all social, psychological, political and environmental factors which affect the overall well being of both the individuals and the community should be examined both qualitatively and quantitatively.  Community Diagnosis is the process of evaluating the health and quality of life of a community both by reviewing previously gathered data and by talking with residents and service providers who have first hand knowledge of that community.  The goal is to understand what it is like to live in a given community.  The process involves examining the culture and functioning of a community, exploring its strengths and assets, and discovering issues of concern to the community members.

“A community diagnosis... aims to understand many facets of a community including culture, values and norms, leadership and power structure, means of communication, helping patterns, important community institutions and history.  A good diagnosis suggests what it is like to live in a community, what the important health problems in a community are, what interventions are most likely to be efficacious, and how the program would be best evaluated.”  (Steuart, GW and Kark, SL, 1962)

Community Diagnosis is conducted by first year MPH students in the

Department of Health Behavior and Health Education

at the

School of Public Health

Dr. Sandra Quinn is the faculty coordinator.
