Twenty-three miles from the Virginia border, Durham is in the Northeast corner of North Carolina's central piedmont, a geographic foothills region lying between mountains and coastal plains. Durham is 140 miles from the Appalachain highlands and 130 miles from the coast. Durham's landscape is characterized by hardwood and evergreen forests, hills dales, meandering rivers and streams, wildlife and rare flowers. Durham is a compact, single-city, 296-square mile community, one-third to one-half the size of neighboring counties. It is 16 miles across, 25 miles long and 28 miles corner to corner, including the City and County of Durham, 75% of the 6,800 acre Research Triangle Park and a sliver of Chapel Hill. Durham has a population of 200,000 and a workforce of 101,000. The community is anything but generic, offering a rich history and a diverse mix of white- and Blue-collar workers, natives and newcomers, scholars and artisans, and people from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds.
