  • Nearly 70% of Chatham residents surveyed by telephone in 1996 reported being inactive or obtaining irregular physical activity, a figure similar to state averages.  North Carolina residents level of physical activity level is currently ranked 46th in the nation, demonstrating a significantly low level of physical activity.
  • 17% of the total sample surveyed reported that they do not have an adequate place in which they can participate in physical activity.
  • Chatham residents, from all age groups and ethnic backgrounds, consume more fruits and vegetables a day when compared to NC averages. 
  • Nearly 30% of Chatham residents surveyed are current smokers, a slightly higher number than state comparisons.  22% of these smokers reported that they have no access to a stop-smoking program. 
  • 60% of Chatham residents surveyed are attempting to lose weight, yet only 35% report the use of both physical activity and modification in diet to do so, the strategy recognized as most likely to be effective.
