  • Chatham County presently has no in-county obstetrics provider.  EMS sources describe the frequent use of their services to transport women out of county for labor and delivery.
  • At first glance, Chatham County fares well in reproductive health, being at the Healthy Carolinians objective of no more than 7.4 infant deaths per 1000 births for the total population for the past four years. For white infants, the rates have declined in recent years to well below this benchmark.
  • Noteworthy is that for nonwhite infants, the infant mortality rate has fluctuated significantly to a 1995 figure that is fifteen times higher that of whites, and far above the objective of no more than 8.7 infant deaths per 1000 nonwhite births.
  • In 1995, 91 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 became pregnant in Chatham County.  Teenage pregnancy rates in the county have dropped slightly in recent years.
