- In 1993 Chatham’s incidence of syphilis was nearly three times that of the state average (18.8/10,000 vs. 6.4/10,000 residents). This figure has decreased each year, due to intensive public health efforts at identification and treatment. In 1994 the Chatham rate was 12.7, and in 1995 the rate was 3.5 (as compared to 4.4 and 3.3 for NC during those years).
- For gonorrhea, however, the reverse is true; Chatham’s rate consistently is a third of the state average (15.5/1000 vs. 33.4/1000 residents for 1995).
- There is little evidence of HIV infection and AIDS in Chatham County. In 1995, 3 new cases of HIV and AIDS were reported. The Chatham county AIDS mortality rate has been less than 5.0/100,000 over the past five years as compared to the state average rate of 12/100,000.
