  • The crack cocaine trade is widely rumored to be high in Siler City, known as “Snow City” throughout the Piedmont of North Carolina.  There is no real data to describe or to define the problem or the consequences of the problems.
  • A 1996 survey administered in the Chatham schools notes that less students disapprove of drug use compared to previous years, which has resulted in increased marijuana use, including early experimentation and lifetime use measures.  Students report that it is easier to get drugs at school than it is to get alcohol at a community store.  A disturbing trend is students perception that their parent’s disapproval of alcohol and drug use has decreased over the last seven years.
  • There are approximately 500 drug and 500 alcohol arrests per year in the county.
  • Most assaults and murder are domestic.  Half are drug-related.
