Purpose: The School of Medicine is dedicated to the education and training of students with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment to meet the medical needs of North Carolinians. Experiential Component: The MD program curriculum offers approximately 20 months of clerkships. October, January, March of MS-I and MS-II years: 6 separate weeks in one of the following settings: Internal Medicine Family Medicine Pediatrics OB-GYN July to June of MS-III year: 12 continuous months, length of rotations vary according the discipline. Family Medicine OB-GYN Internal Medicine Pediatrics Psychiatry Surgery MS-IV year: 7 months |

Roles of the Medical Student: Roles of the students during their first and second years include interviewing patients, obtaining medical histories, and performing physical examinations. During the third year the roles of the students are expanded to therapeutic applications. Students are expected to diagnose and treat patients under the supervision of a physician. Fourth year medical students typically focus in their desired area of specialty. Students recognize and treat acutely ill patients, explore community resources, prepare a useful project for the clinic, and assess and manage patient disorders. |
