Purpose: The mission of the School of Social Work is to prepare students for careers in human services, to develop and test knowledge related to social work, and to provide leadership in addressing social problems and issues confronting individuals, families, and communities. Professional Degree: Master of Social Work, MSW Education: Bachelor's Degree from Accredited University The School of Social Work has five areas of concentration that students may follow. These areas include health, mental health, family and children, community management, and aging. Experiential Component: Field practice usually occurs concurrently with coursework. Students complete 384 hours of agency-based training in their foundation placement (first year) and 720 hours in their advanced concentration placement (second year). First Year (August through May): Two 8 hour days/week Second Year (August through May): Three 8 hour days/week Approximately 65% of students are placed in public human service agencies such as departments of social services, mental health centers, public schools, community health programs, and hospitals; 33% are in private, nonprofit programs such as battered women and homeless shelters, child and family agencies and other community-based programs; and the remaining students are placed in private for-profit programs such as psychiatric hospitals and clinics. Roles of the Social Work Students: The first field practicum, should provide opportunities for students to analyze client/service system functioning to determine relevant intervention strategies; develop and implement appropriate strategies for improving client/service system functioning; and demonstrate beginning ability to evaluate practice. Depending on the student's chosen concentration, the second field practcium offers opportunities such as working with older adults and their families; planning and evaluating community interventions; and educating clients and their families about their specific mental health problems.
