  • Violent causes of death are evident at a higher rate in Chatham County, at a rate of 9.5/1000 as compared to the state rate of 6.6/1000. 
  • Homicides in Chatham County in the past three years have increased, moving from below the state average (12.7 vs. 13.2 in 1991) to above the state average (17.1 vs. 12.7 in 1993). 
  • Domestic Abuse in Chatham County, as is the case everywhere, is difficult to measure.  The Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services reports an approximate 14%/year increase of new women seeking assistance for sexual assault in the past few years, and an approximate 23% increase in new cases of battered women seeking assistance from their program.
  • The Child Abuse/Neglect rate per 1000 children in the county is 50.2, ranking the county as 39th in the state.  The Children’s Index cites a statewide increase of 23.3% in child abuse/neglect in 1994.
  • Over 20% of Chatham residents surveyed by telephone in 1996 report currently keeping a loaded, unlocked firearm in or around their home. 
  • There has been a doubling in numbers of weapons arrests in Chatham over the past five years.
