white rust control

Thank-you to those of you who sent suggestions on possible
organic/conventional treatments for white rust in leafy brassicas. I list
a summary of the responses I got:

RE: White rust control on leafy brassicas, eg pak choy

Summary of Responses

Conventional treatments in Hawaii
* Hawaii: Concerning conventional treatments, a colleague recently ran a
trial with Ridomil, Ridomil/copper, Alliette, and a new product called
Quadris. Both ridomil treatments and Quadris performed well for white rust
control (1 yr trials).

* I am presently trialing a compound called raze, made by the same people
as neen- gold. It has fungistatic properties, don't know on crucifer
rust. For organic (certified OCIA) use, we use bordeau mixture as a
cure-all, and sulphus (Niasul commercial name) on leaf diseases. Let me
know if you find better Organic Fungicides

* The Purdue Midwest Vegetable Production Guide for Commercial Growers
(ID-56) lists the following materials for control of white rust:
Aliette
Basic copper sulfate
The latter may be allowable in organic production.

* Ridomil 2E is cleared for use on spinach for white rust control.
Preplant application and up to two additional applications (label has some
restrictions).

* Seriously (at least semi- seriously) have they tried compost tea? How
big a field is this? Do you have any good compost available? There are
some (strictly antecdotal) stories around here that when compost tea is
allowed to ferment for a couple days, some of the microorganisms produced
can be more beneficial than fresh compost.

Also, what about neem? That new neem product called Trilogy is
supposed to have fungicidal properties. The only problem is that it is
hard to find-they won't even sell it over here in Texas-mostly just in Fla
and Georgia, I think. If you want, I can give you the number of a salesman
in Fla to call. I know you have the trees there-can't you get someone
there to extract the oil?

Additional note: Here is the info on the neem product: The company is
called Thermotrilogy and the Regional Manager of the southeast is Ed
Dickinson. Phone is (800) 847-5620. FAX is (941) 318-9004. Pager is (800)
385-7735.
