GBlist: Asbestos Containment options

I wonder if anyone can provide an information on the issue of asbestos
containment in old buildings.

The situation is the renovaion of a heritage building in Vancouver. During
renovations, it has been found that there is asbestos in the building. The
standard approach is to remove asbestos during renovations. However, the
concern with asbestos is airborne particles; so when the asbestos is
contained, and does not have the opportunity to flake off, presumably there
will no source of fibres, and no problem. There are circumstances where
encapsulating the asbestos can offer an alternative to total removal.

As the stock of older buildings ready for renovation increases, this will
become an ever bigger issue.

Does anyone have any information on possible alternatives to total removal?

Thanks
