Title: The functional value of story in young adult literature about incest

Abstract: Among the materials that librarians who serve young adults collect for their patrons is young adult literature, books published specifically for an audience of young people approximately between the ages of 12 and 18. In the late 1960's and early 1970's realistic fictional young adult literature began depicting characters coming of age by dealing with controversial problems such as drug abuse, abortion, teen pregnancy, gang fighting, rape, and so on. Although incest is a problem that affects many young adults, particularly young women, it was not until 1985 that the topic of incest appeared in realistic fiction published for a young adult audience.

This rhetorical analysis employs Walter Fisher's (1978, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1995) narrative paradigm as a method of examining 18 realistic fictional narratives about incest, published for an audience of young adults, in which a young adult female is the victim of incest by her father, step-father, or uncle. Four kinds of stories that appear repeatedly in relation to the incest plot in young adult literature about incest are examined: fictions created by the victims of incest; existing published fictional or autobiographical narratives; folk tales, fairy tales, myths, and legends; and young adults' written autobiographical narratives. Results of the analysis show that the stories function as methods of coping, telling, sense making, and relationship building. It is concluded that young adult literature about incest can be read as a powerful argument for the value of stories in the lives of young adults.
