Title: Paper-covered books, from their first known use in 1482 to the introduction of cloth, ca. 1825
Abstract: This dissertation identifies the various styles of paper coverings used on books from 1482 to 1825, and formulates practices for describing them with a view to establishing dates, provenance, and function. This represents the first attempt to identify the various styles and structures of early paper-covered books. Using the methods of analytical bibliography and through the analysis of secondary sources, this dissertation reexamines the notion that paper coverings were intended to be temporary.
There are four aspects of the bibliographic description of paper-covered books: evidence, documentation, terminology, and description. The dissertation focuses on each of these with the aim of establishing a typology for--a vocabulary and a way of looking at--paper-covered books. One problem that scholars must face in endeavoring to discuss paper-covered books is the lack of any standardized approach and vocabulary; therefore standards for the scholarly discussion of paper-covered books are established here.
This study is based on the close examination of 850 volumes (derived from 425 titles) described using a controlled vocabulary. The exemplars are from Western Europe, with the exception of a few from America. The two heaviest concentrations, however, are eighteenth century imprints from Italy and Germany.
Three primary paper structures are identified: wrappers, cases, and boards. Variations on these structures are discussed and illustrated. The sampling has been drawn from 21 libraries and private collections. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, it can be seen as representative of the general nature of paper-covered books subject to analysis of the documentary evidence presented. This dissertation, then, presents a selection of the extant paper covering types.
