Title: Information management in local area networks: impact on users' perceptions
Abstract: In this study, computer human interaction factors are examined as a possible source of information to aid in the operation and management of local area computer networks. Users' perceptions of computer performance and response time are evaluated in relation to specific modifications in the information organization of a file server in a local area network configuration running in Novell 3.11.
Investigating network users' perceptions provides data relative to the file server's information organization affect on users. Understanding whether users can detect changes made to the file server information organization structures, such as modifications in mapping or minimization of duplicate files, provides data that will improve local area network management. Recognizing what users actually perceive provides a framework for evaluating use of system management time, equipment and software.
This study uses two treatment groups and a control group. The dependent variables are the subjects' perceptions of the computer performance as indicated by their perception of response time and common interface features including menu usability. The independent variables are the drive mapping levels, a network file management parameter, and the file collection status.
