Title: THE GERMAN PRESS AND KURT VON SCHLEICHER, MAY 1932 - FEBRUARY 1933

Abstract: The object of this dissertation is to examine the German press coverage of Kurt von Schleicher as defense minister and chancellor. By revealing the actual information which the German citizens had at hand, his reactions to events can be better understood. Also, the impact of newspaper reports on Schleicher's career will be investigated. He had become powerful by operating behind the scenes, making contradictory promises to opposing groups, thus press coverage could only harm his position by publicizing his statements and identifying his contacts. Naturally, Schleicher was interested in his public image and his actions to control that image are discussed.
The thirteen newspapers used in this study reflect the views of political parties, interest groups, geographical regions, and independent editors. Four papers were party organs, the KPD's Die Rote Fahne, the SPD's Vorwaerts, the Center Party's Germania, and the NSDAP's Voelkischer Beobachter. Three papers espoused views of interest groups, the financial district controlled the Berliner Boersen Zeitung; the Stahlhelm owned the Kreuz Zeitung, and the Ruhr iron and coal interests directed the Rheinishc Westaelische Zeitung. The last paper, located in Essen, the Koelnische Zeitung of the Rhineland, the Frankfurter Zeitung from Frankfurt on the Main, and Munich's Muenchener Neuste Nachrichten were all able to represent provincial sensibilities. Also the last three named papers with the Vossiche Zeitung and the Berliner Tageblatt were independent of parties and interest groups. Finally, the Taegliche Rundschau was examined because it was influenced by Schleicher and was regarded as his paper. Due to that factor the impact of the Taegliche Rundschau and its editor, Hans Zehrer, is particularly studied. Finally, this dissertation investigates the editorial opinion of each paper toward Schleicher to determine the cause of the opinion and why it changed.
In order to understand a period the historian must see it as those who experienced it did. Newspapers are an excellent source for such a perspective which this work seeks to provide for the Schleicher period.
