Title: The personal papers of Paul A. M. Dirac: Their history and preservation at the Florida State University
Abstract: In 1969, Paul A. M. Dirac, Theoretical Physicist and Nobel Laureate, retired from Churchill College, Cambridge, England where he held the Lucasian Chair in Mathematics, the chair once held by Sir Isaac Newton. After that "retirement," Dirac accepted an Eminent Professorship in Physics at Florida State University (FSU), Tallahassee, FL where he lived and worked until his death in 1984.
Dirac is considered to be one of the major contributors to the "Physics Revolution" of the 20 th century. Stephen Hawking said of him, "Dirac has done more than anyone this century, with the exception of Einstein, to advance physics and change our picture of the universe."
In 1985, Dirac's widow donated his personal papers to FSU. While the University has held these papers since then, minimal measures have been taken for their long-term preservation and ready access.
The Dirac Collection is rich and wide-ranging; it contains the most complete assembly of primary sources on the life and work of Dirac available anywhere. Correspondence with other quantum physicists includes letters from Bohr, Born, Fermi, Fowler, Heisenberg, Lorentz, Kapitza, Oppenheimer, Peierls, Schroedinger, Tamm, and Wigner, Dirac's brother-in-law.
The purpose of this research was to: (1) trace the history of the placement of Dirac's papers at FSU; (2) to describe events leading to the long-term preservation of the papers; (3) to describe the means of research access developed to this body of information (an electronic searchable database--made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation--will be available on the Internet).
