Title: UNIVERSITY PUBLISHING IN LEBANON: A HISTORICAL AND COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE PUBLISHING PROGRAMS OF THE FIVE UNIVERSITIES IN LEBANON

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to survey university publishing in Lebanon. Five universities of different backgrounds are established in the country, the American University of Beirut, the University of Saint Joseph, the University of the Holy Spirit at Kaslik, the Lebanese University, and the Beirut Arab University. The study was intended to investigate the publishing program of each university and to examine the publications to determine the lines along which the publishing programs developed. Seven hypotheses were proposed to guide the study. They addressed particularly the relationship of the university publishing program to the governing body of the university, the policies concerning the number of titles published, the language and subject areas covered by the publications, and the policies and procedures for selecting manuscripts for publication. They also addressed the relationship of university publications to the scholarly activities of the faculty members, and to the total book production of the country.

It was found that the publishing programs of the five universities developed in distinct ways rather than in any uniform pattern. Each program reflected the interests of the university from which it emanated. Several factors affected the growth and development of the publishing programs. Some of these were external, such as the political and economic environment of the country. Others were internal, related to the attitude of the universities toward their programs. The number of titles published by the universities fluctuated considerably. Their publications are small compared to the number of titles issued by Lebanese general publishers. University publications provided only a partial outlet for the scholarly publication activities of faculty members. In regard to subject fields of publications, it was found that the universities published in a wide variety of fields. Some fields were of special interest because of their regional character.
