Title: THE IMPACT OF THE INDIANA UNIVERSITY - THAILAND CONTRACT IN TEACHER EDUCATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIBRARY RESOURCES AND SERVICES IN THAILAND

Abstract: The purpose of this study has been to examine contract activities concerning library matters to determine what was done and how it was done, and to assess the role of this project in eliciting improvement in Thai libraries.

This investigation has utilized historical methodology with information derived from published and unpublished materials in both Thai and English, and from personal informants who provide information through interviews and personal correspondence.

As regards library organization, this study found influence in the areas of cataloging and classification, bibliographical activities and indexing, and in physical facilities; very little influence appeared in the areas of library cooperation and the development of union catalogs. In the area of library profession, significant influence was found in library education and professional competence. For library resources and services, this project laid a solid foundation for a new concept of library service in Thailand. Principal impact factors responsible for these changes were returning Thai librarians, the work of the library advisors on the project, and model libraries. It cannot be demonstrated, however, that growth in the number of libraries and size of their collections, number of users, and public expenditures resulted from this project.

The value of this contract to Thailand was very large, significant, and long lasting. Its value to Indiana University was also substantial in terms of program strength in the area of international concern. It is therefore recognized that international programs of continuing cooperation among libraries and library schools are most mutually beneficial.
