Title: INVENTORY, OVERLAP, AND DESCRIPTION OF PSYCHOLOGY COLLECTIONS IN RESEARCH LIBRARIES: STUDY OF A CONSPECTUS

Abstract: This study explores the relationships among the characteristics of psychology collections in research libraries, the title overlap between the collections, the academic program supported by the collections, and the assessments of the strengths of the collections. Five percent proportionate random samples, selected from the psychology monograph holdings of three research libraries, were checked against the holdings of each of the other libraries to determine collection overlap. The percent of overlap of each psychology collection by each of the other collections and the characteristics of each psychology collection (age, language, subject) were determined. Standard statistical measures of correlation and nonparametric procedures were used to analyze and test the relationships between psychology collection overlap and assigned psychology collection strengths (ECS) on the psychology conspectus; collections characteristics and assigned collection levels (ECS); collection overlap and collection characteristics; collection overlap and characteristics of the psychology academic program; assigned collection levels (ECS) and characteristics of the psychology academic program.

The major conclusions concerning the overlap of psychology monograph collections and the assessments of the collections from this exploratory study are: (1) The overlap of psychology subject collections in the three libraries is much higher than the general overlap found when entire library collections are sampled. (2) The unique psychology titles tend to be the older and the foreign language materials. (3) Each of the psychology collections contributed unique titles to the total sample, and each would benefit significantly from access to the unique items in the other two collections. (4) There is a strong positive relationship between the overlap of the total psychology sample by a library's collection and the qualitative ratings of the psychology graduate program supported by that collection. (5) Assigned ECS levels on the psychology conspectus are not a good indicator of title diversity or title overlap among the three psychology collections.
