The main objective of the study was to devise a method which would aid in solving a cataloging problem, specifically corporate body entry in the catalog. An analytical method was devised whereby an overall analysis of the total entries in a one month's cataloging input into the National Union Catalog was made and a further detailed analysis of a subset of these entries, corporate body entries, with emphasis on the application of cataloging rules, AACR 1 and AACR 2 was made. Entries in the sample data base were counted and identified according to type of entry and in addition, corporate body entries were assigned rules from both AACR 1 and AACR 2. Data from the overall analysis revealed the total number and types of entries in the catalog and the frequency of occurrence of each type. Analysis of the corporate body entries yielded information on the frequency of use of corporate body entries in the catalog, the total number of rules in both AACR 1 and AACR 2 for corporate body entries, the frequency of use of corporate body rules in the catalog, evidence for the categories or types of corporate body entries in the catalog and information on the usage of form of work rather than on the nature of a potential author. The investigation showed that the catalog itself should be used as the data base for further experiments designed to help solve cataloging problems. |
