Title: Fund raising in publicly supported academic libraries of institutions belonging to the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges

Abstract: This study developed and tested a fund-raising model identifying organizational practices that contribute to fund-raising effectiveness in publicly-supported academic libraries. This study also examined how publicly-supported academic libraries organize and manage their fund-raising programs. The libraries selected for this study belong to institutions that are members of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC).

The first step was to develop a theoretical fund-raising model from the literature on fund raising in higher-education. This literature was examined to identify existing models. The model for this study is based primarily on the models of Pickett (1977) and Hunter (1987). The second step was to modify the higher-education models to fit publicly-supported academic libraries based on the distinguishing characteristics of these libraries in relation to their parent institutions.

The third step was to test this theoretical model against data from publicly-supported libraries that have been found to be most successful or least successful in fund raising. A survey-questionnaire was used to determine which of the fund- raising practices identified in the theoretical model are used by libraries selected for this study.

In order to distinguish between the most successful and the least successful libraries, the amount of money raised by the library was compared to the amount of money raised by the university. The libraries participating in this study that raised a larger percentage of money compared to the university were considered most successful, while the libraries raising a lesser percentage compared to the university were considered least successful.

The study then examined the most and least successful libraries to determine which elements of the fund-raising model were associated with each group. Based on these data the model fund-raising program developed for this study was modified to reflect fund-raising practices at the most successful institutions.
