Title: A Comparison of Citation Similarities and Index Term Similarities for Linking Subject Related Documents
Abstract: Bibliographic citations attached to documents have been used in various ways to link related items in the literature. The cited document has been considered to be subject linked to the citing documents and therefore can be used as a means of indexing documents.
In this study citations are used as content descriptors of documents. A comparison has Jeen made between subject related and citation related documents to explore the degree of capability of citations to bring together subject related documents. A measure of relatedness waS computed between each pair uf documents based on the number of overlapping index terms, as well as overlapping citations. The two measures were compared by calculating a correlation measure between them.
The method was tested in an indexed collection of biomedical literature. It was possible to determine the degree of correlation between the two measures at any specific level of relatedness among document pairs. It is shown that citations can mostly provide the same document clusters as provided by index terms at a relatively low levels of specificity, and therefore can do the same task of grouping subject related documents as is done by index terms.
