Title: Evaluating resource sharing library networks (British Columbia, Canada)
Abstract: Resource sharing networks need to be evaluated from the perspective of the member library and its users, on a micro- evaluation level using the output of the system. The first part of this thesis reviews previous work on the evaluation of networks and the use of availability studies in evaluating libraries. The writer then develops a methodology for the evaluation of networks based on item availability and the Kantor branching technique. He applies this methodology to a small community college library in a resource sharing network in British Columbia, Canada and evaluates the library's own performance, the performance of the network and the performance of the library in the network. The potentia1 effect of the network on library performance is calculated and library performance is found to improve as a result of network involvement. The network is also found to benefit from library participation in the network. The writer concludes by making some comments based on this study on the operation of resource sharing networks.
